Computer Science: Theory and Practice Go “Hand in Hand” (June 22, 2010)

On 20th June 2010, Access American Education (AAE) had successfully organized the seminar “Computer Science and career opportunities”, presented by Dr. Robert Dryden- former dean of Engineering & Computer Science department and Dr. Reardon- Former President of Portland State University.

Join this workshop included students from the school: HCMC University of Foreign Languages – Information Technology (Huflit), University of Natural Sciences, Aptech, iSpace…

Opening the seminar was the general introduction about PSU presented by Dr. Dryden (say hello from former president Reardon). One of the interesting things about Portland State University is the diversity of the students. Most students come from 50 states of the United States and over 100 different countries all over the world, including 76 students from Vietnam are currently enrolled. Especially, outstanding Vietnamese students will receive US $4,500 renewable scholarship awards.

During the presentation, Dr. Robert Dryden highlighted the vision of Maseeh College for 2010:

  • Grow by 100% in enrollments and graduates
  • Recruit 50 outstanding new faculty
  • State-of-the-art labs in all departments
  • Recognized research “spires of excellence”
    • Regional Relevance – National Prominence
  • Consolidated in a landmark facility

Moreover, the department also plans to increase research support up to 17 million dollars in one year. (Figure 2) Thus, students majoring in engineering and computer science will have more opportunities for self- development and practical learning as well as earning some money to cover their tuition fee. PSU Computer Science Majors According to recent survey, there are over 40% of students taking Computer Science subject at PSU. (Figure 3)

Ending the seminar is a short video clip about Intel Scholars Program at Portland State University. Last year, Intel Vietnam had selected Portland State University to send the top students selected from the Intel Scholars Program to study there. In August 2010, the school would receive 72 more students from Vietnam. This short video clip has somewhat helped the students virtualise the student life at PSU.
