Vietnam & sustainable development

According to the report of Brundtland World Commission on Environment and Development. “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

At this stage of economic development, the environmental issues are the crucial problems for the generation of the country. Along with the process of industrialization and urbanization, Vietnam is facing many challenges such as resource depletion, water and air pollution, overpopulation… Indeed, sustainable development is the solution to these urgent issues mentioned above and become a part of the business nowadays.

Understanding the importance of Sustainable Development, Portland State University is the first U.S. university initiated a new field of study “Sustainable Development & Leadership” to offer intensive training for the country’s future leaders to help them have a more comprehensive view on the development of increasingly complex of human beings, point out optimal solutions based on sustainable development.

Indeed, this will be a “hot” major in the near future due to the need of knowledgeable labour force in this field to help the country address the challenges such as economic efficiency as well as environmental conservation.

Why Portland State University?

Portland State University (PSU) has over 28.000 students (academic year 2009-2010). The school is located in Portland (Oregon) – the greenest city with modern & effective public transport. Also, Portland is also known as “City of Roses”.

School also was voted as one of the best public schools throughout the United States for eight years in a row(U.S. News and World Report 2010). The school’s slogan “Let Knowledge Serve the City” is the motivation of the staff who constantly strive to learn in order to serve the community. The school has been co-operating with University of Natural Science in Ho Chi Minh City in the program “Community-Based Service Learning”. PSU has sent many U.S. students as well as faculties to Vietnam to do social work. In addition, more than 50 Vietnamese government and educational leaders have visited PSU to learn about our environmental sustainability practices and governance structures.

PSU is committed to sustainability as a core theme. The ten-year, $25 million challenge grant from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, awarded to PSU in September 2008, has catalysed action and served as a means to meet the fierce regional and global competition for preeminence in sustainability scholarship and action.

  • Urban and civic ecology, including ecodistricts, ecosystem services, sustainable governance and urban-rural continua;
  • Sustainable urban infrastructure, including transport, energy, water management, and social infrastructure;
  • Green building: including all facets of green construction, supply chain, materials and methods;
  • Green business practices, including leadership, management, green accounting, and the establishment of green business clusters.
